Frequently asked questions
The Government of Poland is offering compensation for property left in the former eastern territories of Poland because of the war.
Compensation is at 20% of the current value of the land and buildings.
Compensation is fully funded by the sale of government property.
Nearly $100 million has already been awarded.
If you wish to make a claim for compensation you do not have to live in Poland today but you have only until the end of 2008 to apply!
It is very important to register your claim before the 31st December 2008.
Here are the requirements for compensation:
  • The owners of the land had to be Polish citizens in 1939;
  • The owners of the land had to be living in Poland in 1939;
  • The owners – or their heirs – must be Polish citizens now (you can apply for confirmation of your Polish citizenship if your parents were Polish citizens);
  • The claimants must be able to show they have inheritance rights;
  • There must be some way you can describe the property.
Even if you do not have sufficient evidence now, you should still register your claim.
We have organised volunteers to assist you with information on how to prepare a claim.

The 8 July 2005 law (dz.u.05.169.1418 “o realizacji prawa do rekompensaty z tytułu pozostawienia nieruchomości poza obecnymi granicami rzeczypospolitej polskiej”) in Poland provides for compensation on an equal basis for all pre-war Polish citizens leaving land outside the present borders of Poland due to circumstances surrounding the 1939-1945 war.  This includes the soldiers who served in the Polish Forces in the West, as well as their families who took refuge in camps around the world.
